Preparing Your Central AC For Spring: What You Need To Know

Are the warmer months of spring finally approaching where you live? If so, then it likely won't be long before you need to kick on your home's central AC for the first time in order to keep your home cool and comfortable. However, if your AC unit has been unused since the past summer/fall months, there are some steps you may want to take to prepare it for the upcoming months of use.

Swap Out That Air Filter

When was the last time you changed your home's air filter? More than likely, it's been a few months. Get your HVAC system off to a clean start the first time you use your AC by having a clean filter in place. You can find replacement filters at your local home improvement store, and there are even allergy-friendly filters and other options to suit your needs.

Give it a Once-Over

Over the winter, it's possible that sticks, branches, and other debris may have fallen around your outdoor AC unit. Before you turn on your AC for the first time in the spring, it's a good idea to do a visual inspection of the outdoor unit and clean up any obvious debris and/or obstructions around it. Next fall, you might even want to consider securing a tarp over your AC unit to protect it against damage over the winter.

Schedule a Tune-Up

It's probably been months since the last time your AC unit was used, so it's never a bad idea to schedule an inspection and tune-up with a professional air conditioning service. These inspections are great for making sure everything is in good working order, and most tune-ups will also include things like cleaning out your AC supply vent and other tasks that will help your AC unit run more efficiently this summer.

Consider a New Thermostat

Finally, if you don't currently have a programmable or Wi-Fi-enabled thermostat, now is also a great time to consider upgrading to one. These thermostats can easily pay for themselves in energy savings over the course of a few years and can come in handy not just during the summer months, but all year round.

A little bit of preparation can go a long way in making sure your home's central AC unit runs smoothly this coming summer. Be sure to follow these steps and don't put off scheduling your tune-up until the last second, as appointment slots can fill up quickly. For more information, contact AC services in your area.
