2 AC Maintenance Tasks You Should Do

When you are getting ready for summer to happen, you want to make sure that your air conditioner is ready to go. You don't want to have to find a way to keep cool when the really hot weather comes because your AC is broken. Before that time comes, you should make sure that you do some basic maintenance on your air conditioner so that it's ready to go. 

Clean the Outdoor Unit

To make sure that your air conditioner is ready to go, clean out the unit that sits outside your house. This can be really easy to do. The first thing that you are going to need to do is to pick out any big debris like litter or sticks. You also want to make sure that there are no weeds or anything growing up through the unit. Then you need to spray the unit down. You don't want to use a power washer on this, because you don't want to damage the fins, but you can use your hose and just spray off any small debris like dirt, grass, and small twigs. Make sure that you work from the top down, so that you aren't washing dirt onto the areas you just cleaned. 

Change the Air Filters

Another thing that you need to do is make sure that your air filters are all either clean or new. The air filters are there to keep dirt, dust, debris, and allergens from blowing around your HVAC system and your ducts. If the air filters are dirty, they will block off some of the cold air that should be coming into your house. That means that your house won't meet the setting on your thermostat. That will make your air conditioner work harder than it needs to in order to keep your house to the same temperature. That is going to end up costing you more money on your cooling bills. It will also cut down the life of your air conditioner, which is going to cost you more money in the long run because you are going to have to replace it sooner than you might otherwise have to.
